Together We Rise, A Retrospective

Tuesday – Sunday in the Raymond Center

The area’s premier senior theater troupe engages, enlightens, and entertains with robust humor, song and dance. Like a fine wine, they just get better with age! This year’s show is not only funny and entertaining, but emotionally resonant.

Their director Brad Wages says, “Last spring I sat in our theatre’s parking lot, taking a minute to really look at the building and the construction site. I was overwhelmed with emotion and memories of standing there the morning after Hurricane Ian hit. The shock, the sadness, the uncertain future and the fear all returned to me. However, it was brief. Other memories quickly came to mind as well. The hope, strength, and resilience of our staff, patrons, and friends replaced the fear and sadness. That became the inspiration for this year’s production. I wanted to tell Venice Theatre’s story.”

How I Learned to Drive

March 20-April 4 in the Pinkerton Theatre

Adult language/themes. Audience discretion advised.

Alyssa Goudy stars as Li’l Bit in the Stage 2 production of How I Learned to Drive Paula Vogel’s riveting debut won the Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony® and Drama Desk Awards. It’s a fearless, sad, and surprisingly funny memory play about an adolescent girl and her uncle. The only man in her life who treats her well is the man who gets far too close to her.

Critics have described How I Learned to Drive as “a tremendous achievement, genuine and genuinely disturbing” (Village Voice) and “a richly poetic and picturesque landscape… a potent and convincing comment on a taboo subject.” (Variety).

Director Kristofer Geddie says the play explores trauma with sensitivity and humor, its impact growing over time. “When How I Learned to Drive premiered, conversations about abuse and accountability were mostly whispered rather than spoken aloud,” he says. “Nearly three decades later, we’re beginning to confront these difficult truths more openly. This play invites audiences into that conversation and asks us to examine the emotional complexity behind it.”
