Home sales (up 7% Sarasota) and values are up in September . What else would you expect for this paradise? The U.S. stock market is up, local retail sales are up 6% over last year, where do people get all this negativity and worry from?

 

 

 


$32 million will be spent on video cameras at traffic light intersections by Sarasota and Manatee County. The Feds are kicking in almost $3 mill. They say traffic should flow 48% better. We'll believe it when we see it. You can't take bad drivers off the road.

 

 The original crew from the early 1990's set the stage for the massive rowing complex Sarasota County is undertaking. They were called Riverview Crew, which then expanded to Sarasota H.S. Crew, and Venice Crew. They traveled 1,000s of miles a year to row and won virtually every top race on the Eastern Seaboard. Some are now doctors, artists, and Hollywood TV writers.

Amorie, Dalisha and Maliq are three of the Central-Cocoanut Neighborhood Scavenger Hunters, a group of mostly 2-12 year olds (with a handful of adults), who have been creating community in their Newtown neighborhood for the past two years. On foot or by bike, they explore their 50-block neighborhood and report back to fellow neighbors about the everyday good stuff they've discovered along the way. The group received a $25,000 grant to expand their good news program.

 

 

Sarasota County a leader in energy savings makes available an energy savings bag of goods. The Federal grant for around $1.5 mill allowed the county to spend around $500K on their buildings and a mill for area residents to improve their energy consumption.

Gov. Scott turns down $2.4 billion in Federal high speed rail money.  Scott said, he turned the money down because there is "potential for significant capital and operating cost overruns." Scott went on to list several port and freeway improvements he believes would bring more benefit.

 

The renovated Ed Smith stadium won't be fully completed for months. The Baltimore Orioles are in town and you can still watch them practice there.

 

 

Sarasota County awards a $3.7 million dollar contract that will time all the traffic lights in Sarasota so that no one will have to stop for red light one after the other. Just kidding, we'll see if it really works better.

 

 


Sarasota County Commissions to talk about the 2012 budget. Currently,
at $998 million, it peaked at $1.142 billion in 2007 up from $808 million in 2002. With capital improvements running $300 to $400 million a year double what they used to be.

Sanborn Studios that came in with a bang and a $650K grant from Sarasota County terminated their lease at Lakewood Ranch. It looks like they are cutting back and consolidating operations. According to a 23 year old Florida law sports franchises that receive local tax dollars such as Ed Smith Stadium/Baltimore Orioles are required to let the facility be utilized for the homeless when not in use for other purposes. Now that's a grabber..... It would also include the Bucs, Dolphins, Marlins, Magic franchises and their stadiums. State Senator Bennett is proposing a law that would enforce this? Why would you need a law to enforce a current law?

A diabetic Sarasota mother pregnant with two fetuses loses both babies at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. State reviewers say certain procedures weren't followed and the woman wasn't given a blood sugar test until six hours after arriving. Hospital officials said they will correct any deficiencies.

The City of Sarasota has banned ice cream trucks for over a decade.  Brenda Zook is not happy with that ruling so she can sell ice cream. Who can figure the city out, no ice cream, wants parking meters, fought the new Ringling Bridge at a taxpayer cost of $5 million, tries to get rid of the homeless? City of Venice approves Sharky's restaurant to grow from 300 seats to 550 seats on city land.

 


Gov. Rick Scott axes funds for a Sarasota rowing facility and three local college projects which were among $615 million in state funding vetoed by him Thursday. Shown above is the original Sarasota Crew from 1992. They won hundreds of medals and set the course for the rising popularity of local rowing programs. Local rowers went on to win scholarships at virtually every Ivy League school and many other colleges. Tribute should be made to Peter de Manio who founded the program in 1991.

 

If SW Airlines pulls out of Sarasota we will lose about a third of our commercial air traffic. SW just merged with Air Tran that now services SRQ.

460 new parking meters are destined to be begun to be installed today on Main Street in Sarasota. With the Sarasota Film Festival in full swing maybe it wasn't the best week to start the new program. $1 an hour to park.

 

 

 

How do you file bankruptcy when you have 400% mark up and you are the premium furniture store on the West Coast of Florida? The company founded in 1915 did over $130 million in sales and owes its creditors over $30 million. Some say it was poor management decisions to open a Costa Rica store and Cape Coral, etc.

 

 


Some say you can expect your electric bill to go up this year. The Republicans in the months before the 2011 session convened received the following donations: $250,000 to the state party from Florida Power & Light, $200,000 from Progress Energy and $180,000 from TECO Energy. Sarasota County schools  hope  to put solar panels on some buildings but are awaiting state legislation that would make that possible.

Davis launched The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media in 2007.[12] The Institute’s first focus is an on-the ground program that works collaboratively with the entertainment industry to dramatically increase the presence of female characters in media aimed at children and to reduce stereotyping of females by the male-dominated industry.

Jackson Labs asks for $300 million from state and local taxpayers to fund their move here. $100 million from the state and $200 million locally. Part of the local funds would come from Sarasota County and the rest from the Community Foundation. Jackson Labs would partner with USF and Sarasota Memorial Hospital. JL says they would create 2,200 jobs over 20 years, that comes to public funding of around $136,000 per job. Over 20 years, who'll be around by then?

State College of Florida (MCC), the Gulf Coast Foundation and Lakewood Ranch want to set up some kind of economic stimulus center with a $14 million dollar building. They would like to have the Sarasota County Economic Development nonprofit corp involved but, hadn't worked out an agreement with Kathy Bayliss its Executive Director. We'd like to know more about how this is going to be effective. The same program in St. Petersburg hasn't shown much results in around 10 years.

Sarasota company that got a $650,000 grant from Sarasota County asks for another $500,000. The company Sanborn Studios is a start up film company. The owner Ken Sanborn told the commission he couldn't appear at the public meeting for the funds. That helicopter in the sky today you may see could be the Jackson Lab people. They are considering  moving some of their operations to Sarasota. They have over 1,400 people between Maine and California. It is a nonprofit organization and they are looking for $380 million in state and local funding.

 2 year old Emalynn Roberts Daughter of Deputy Sherriff James Roberts and Katie Roberts, was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 with Chronic Inflammatory Polyneuropathy. CIP is a nerve swelling and irritation that leads to loss of movement or sensation. They had probably over a thousand people attend.

 

 

 

Lakewood Ranch bus service gets $1 million dollar grant to provide new bus service. Do you think residents are going to ride the bus there? It will help low income workers get to jobs there though.

 

The big question is what is going in on the old GMC dealer lot along U.S. 41? Most of the buildings are torn down but, one they kept up. Word on the street is that the ole Boatyard Bob's fame is going to put a waterfront bar on the property. He has developed two waterfront areas and then converted them into condos.

 

 

* Gov. Scott flies his private jet to meet with casino owner in Las Vegas as part of an 'introductory' meeting. Word is that Florida legislature may consider casinos in Florida very shortly. $500 million a year in tax revenue is anticipated. Turn that figure 3x's and you have $1.5 billion in new dollars in Florida to help with job growth and employment. Tampa, Miami and a few other Florida cities are being considered.
