Dan Belcher and Karen Fralich (shown here) took first prize — $5,000 — for “Nightmares,” a playfully titled carving featuring beautifully textured horses. World Champions of Sand Sculpting were declared Sunday in the second-annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition.

The Blue Ridge Pkwy from our SE Tour. The leaves had just begun to change last week. We did Atlanta, Asheville, BR Pkway, Nashville, Chattanooga then back home Sarasota which had cooled down since left a week ago.

This message on a building overlooking the WTC site tells a heartful message to the world. "The Human Spirit is not measured by the size of the act, but by the size of the heart." The brand new Boeing 787 parked at Sarasota Bradenton Airport over the weekend on it's test flight back from Lima, Peru to Seattle. The 787 is 20% more fuel efficient and can fly for 18 hours with 297 passengers on board. 

 

 


Mote’s Seahorse Conservation Laboratory celebrated a milestone Tuesday — shipping seahorses to its 50th zoo and aquarium to be used in educational displays.

Mote Aquarium has sent seahorses to top zoos and aquariums in all four corners of the United States, reaching as far as Seattle. The 50th shipment went to Chicago.

 

Sarasota's McDonald's oldest (newest?) customer begs outside their store on S. Tamiami Trail.

Black bear caught in Naples neighborhood. The 2 year old bear will be relocated to Picayune Strand Forest, around 20 miles east of Naples. To date there have been no black bear attacks in Florida. Another reader reports a black bear was found in a friends backyard in Englewood.

Friday evening's sunset was magnificent. We hadn't caught one in two weeks. The full moon was at the opposite end of the sky at the same time as the sunset.

Florida Eagle Egg Hatches In Tennessee - The non-profit American Eagle Foundation (www.eagles.org) puppet-feeds a bald eaglet hatchling to avoid human-imprinting and prepare it for the wild. The egg was rescued from a nest atop a ballpark lighting tower in Sarasota in December, and recently hatched in an incubator at the Foundation's Dollywood headquarters in Pigeon Forge. Past honorees at the Gala include Tom Izzo, Tony Dungy, Rick Pitino, Billy Donovan, Bob Knight, Pat Summitt and Mike Krzyzewski. Over 800 attendees are expected to attend this year, including major NBA basketball stars and industry leading coaches.

The Sarasota County School District named Trish Jones, a media center aide at North Port's Lamarque Elementary today as its 2011 School-Related Employee of the Year. Jones was chosen to receive this year’s honor at the School-Related Employee awards luncheon at Michael’s on East in Sarasota. The full moon won't shine on till Saturday, but this partial moon caught our eye this morning.

 

 

It's definitely a Florida sunrise with the sun gleaming through the moss laiden trees Tuesday. The storm that came through late Tuesday dropped over 3 inches of rain in the area before it was done Wednesday morning. Temps today are expected to be in the mild low 60's.

 

 

 

We gasped when we saw the driver of this vehicle go through a red light on S. Tamami Trail and pull into JRyan's restaurant lot.

 

 

This is the first time we have seen this type of computer window. You must answer no if you are driving.

 

 

 

 Kite surfers came out in droves to Siesta Key Beach when they heard winds would exceed 30 mph. A couple sets up camp to watch with their wind umbrella to protect them. See our video of the surfers on our Facebook page
